Women and Testosterone: The Key to a Healthy Libido

As women add more candles to their birthday cake, they may notice symptoms such as low energy, weight gain, difficulty sleeping, and yes, low libido. Today we’re going to talk about women and testosterone, and this hormone’s role in a healthy libido.

In recent years, Jane Fonda made the news when she revealed the secret to her healthy love life in her seventies: testosterone. Stating that she was having the best sex of her life, she made many people envious. She also shared the fact that she takes testosterone supplementation for a healthy love life.

That’s right – Fonda stated that she starting taking the sex hormone testosterone and it has made a huge difference in her romantic moods and inclinations. Many people at the time voiced their disappointment or even concern over using what some have called artificial help, and we beg to differ from the skeptics. Bioidentical testosterone is the real thing.

First, testosterone is not exclusive to men, although it’s primary known as the male sex hormone. Women also produce testosterone in smaller amounts in their ovaries and adrenal glands. As women age, the level of testosterone begins to decline, which can be a huge factor in women losing their libido as they age.

Testosterone Improves Low Libido
As a substantial number of women experience diminished sexual interest and well-being during their late reproductive years. Testosterone therapy improves well-being, mood, and sexual function in premenopausal women with low libido and low testosterone. (1)  In women who have had one or both of their ovaries removed, treatment with testosterone improved sexual function and psychological well-being substantially more than placebo treatment. (2)  In a study of women in whom menopause had been induced by surgery, high doses of testosterone increased sexual desire and arousal more than placebo or estrogen alone. (3, 5)  Results from clinical studies show that hormone replacement therapy with estrogen plus androgens provides greater improvement in psychologic and sexual symptoms than does estrogen alone in naturally and surgically menopausal women. (4)

Either way you look at it, whether you’re a husband or wife, low testosterone may result in the loss of a marriage. Low testosterone is a negative game changer.

The good news is there is a healthy solution. Replenishing your body’s natural level of hormones wouldn’t be classified as artificial help if done properly and monitored by a trained physician in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. By balancing your body’s level of testosterone using bioidentical hormones, you’re simply putting back in what’s missing. Who says you need to feel old when there are natural options?

In addition to being a natural female libido enhancer, testosterone improves the tone of the vagina and bladder, decreases body fat, improves muscle strength and bone density, enhances thyroid hormone function, relieves anxiety and depression, and promotes mental clarity.

Bioidentical testosterone contains a myriad of benefits for us all.

      Dear Rose,

Thank you for your comment. We do not know what dose Jane Fonda is taking, but our doctors individualize the dose for our patients depending upon their body’s needs. There is not a one-size-fits-all dose. Your symptoms are key in determining what hormone deficiency could be causing them. Please take our symptom checker: http://makeshift-worm.flywheelsites.com/symptom-checker/

If you are not on the right dose of testosterone for your body’s needs, then you may still have some symptoms until the dose is adjusted to make those symptoms go away. If we may be of service to you, please call our Wellness Consultants for a complimentary wellness consultation at 281-698-8698.

      To your health,
