Why Americans Are Turning to Alternative Healthcare

There are 350 million visits to medical doctors each year.  This is a large number, but did you know that there are more than 420 million visits to alternative practitioners each year?  That is 70 million more visits from people who are choosing to look beyond conventional therapies to alternative medicine for answers to their health problems and the trend is ever increasing.

What has caused conventional medicine’s fall from the pedestal?  The answer is that somewhere between miraculous medical breakthroughs and innovations in technology we have lost sight of the most important piece of medicine and the reason behind taking the Hippocratic Oath in the first place: the patient.

As a medical community we have taken our eye off the proverbial ball.  The patient has become secondary to the results of diagnostic testing.  In times prior to such strides in technology, your doctor would be able to sit down and really listen to your concerns for a lengthy amount of time. By all accounts he had to focus intently as technology could not be depended upon to confirm diagnoses.  Today, doctors have a scarce amount of time to visit with each patient and oftentimes, after a few minutes a prescription is written to temporarily alleviate the presented complaint.  As a nation, rather than taking the extra step to look for the root cause, we have turned to prescription drugs to address symptoms.  In turn, Americans have become comfortable with the idea that prescription drugs are the answer to their health woes, despite the fact that their health problems are obviously not caused by a low level of prescription drugs in their body.  We have begun looking to prescription drugs to solve our problems.,  , Our medicine cabinets are bursting at the seams, but the real question is, are we healthier for it?

If conventional medicine and drugs are the answer, then why are 420 million people looking to alternative medicine for treatment?  The obvious answer: conventional medicine did not provide a solution.  Technology has enabled us to live longer lives, but what about our quality of life?

Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  More than ever, Americans are choosing to take charge of their health and to focus on prevention rather than just dealing with the symptoms.  The first step to getting on a path of health and wellness is to become knowledgeable about what makes your body healthy and what doesn’t.
