Hayden Panettiere

Once again, a celebrity has brought to light just how real and difficult postpartum depression can be for new moms. Last month, Hayden Panettiere, an actress currently on the hit show “Nashville,” revealed that she is getting treatment for postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter earlier this year. Others who have spoken out about their experiences with postpartum depression include Drew Barrymore, Brook Shields, Gwyneth Paltrow, Courteney Cox, and Marie Osmond.

These ladies set a good example in that they sought treatment for postpartum depression. To be sure that women are getting the right type of help, you must understand what causes postpartum depression so that it can be treated properly, safely and most effectively.

What Happens to Your Hormones After Childbirth
During pregnancy, the placenta produces progesterone – known for its mood elevating effects – at levels that are many times higher than your body normally produces. Upon the birth of the baby, the placenta is expelled resulting in an immediate drop in a woman’s progesterone level. If you know anyone that has experienced the “baby blues,” this could be why.

At the same time a woman’s post-delivery progesterone levels are in the tank, her estrogen levels remain high, creating a hormonal imbalance. Oftentimes, this imbalance in progesterone and estrogen, referred to as estrogen dominance, does not normalize after childbirth. The symptoms of estrogen dominance can be weight gain or mood-related symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks or depression. Estrogen dominance also becomes a catalyst for many other hormone issues. Hypothyroidism can even occur as a result.

Antidepressants are NOT the Answer
Sadly, antidepressants are usually offered as the only solution to postpartum depression. While the intent might be well-meaning, antidepressants do not solve the underlying cause of postpartum depression. As Dr. Hotze explains, the best treatment for postpartum depression is to replenish the hormones that the body is missing.

Real Progesterone IS the Answer
Since the drastic drop in progesterone causes the low moods of postpartum depression, it only makes sense to restore the body’s progesterone levels with bioidentical progesterone.
