Stacey: Welcome to Dr. Hotze’s Wellness Revolution. I’m Stacey Bandfield here with Dr. Steven Hotze, founder of the Hotze Health & Wellness Center, and as a reminder, you can always download our podcasts at HotzePodcast.com. That’s H-O-T-Z-E Podcast.com. Today, we are discussing the dangers of fluoride, aren’t we, Dr. Hotze?

Dr. Hotze: Right. Thank you so much, Stacey. Fluoride, yes, it’s a significant problem that has caused a huge epidemic of hypothyroidism in the United States. Fluoride in the water. Now I believe that you and everybody needs a health coach. You need a doctor and a staff of professionals who can coach you on a path to health and wellness naturally, so as you mature, you have energy, you have get up and go without having to use a bunch of pharmaceutical drugs. If that makes sense to you, then listen up. Fluoride is a halogen. It’s in the same family of the periodic…chemistry period table that you had in high school in chemistry class, under halogens. You had bromine, you had iodine, bromine, chlorine, fluoride, and those are the halogens. They are very important in the production of thyroid hormones, specifically the iodine.

Thyroid Hormones

It’s iodine that becomes part of the thyroid molecule, which is produced by the thyroid gland in the neck. It produces two primary thyroid hormones, T4, which is the thyroxine molecule, or the thyroid molecule with four iodine atoms on it, and T3 is the thyroid hormone with three iodine atoms on it. So that’s the active thyroid hormone, T3, the inactive is the T4. T4 has to be converted within the cells to T3, and then in the cells, the T3 activates the mitochondria, the power plants within the cells, enables the cells to produce energy. So T3 is critical for the production of energy.

Now, in order for the cells to be able to convert T4 to T3, they need iodine.  They need some key hormones, in women, progesterone, in men, testosterone, in both men and women, cortisol, are very important. Zinc is important, selenium is also important for the production or conversion of T4 to T3, the active thyroid hormone.

How Fluoride Poisons Your Thyroid

Fluoride is a halogen that competes with iodine.

  1. It damages the thyroid gland itself and the follicles where the thyroid hormone is stored. It damages these follicles and causes inflammation, which can lead to autoimmune thyroiditis.
  2. The second thing that it does is it competes with iodine so that instead of having four iodine molecules, you may have one or two fluoride molecules hooked up to the thyroid hormone, which is inactive, then. So you have a competition between fluoride, one type of halogen, which chemically, halogens are all very similar in structure, so it competes with iodine to replace the iodine on the thyroid molecule. The fluoride also poisons the enzyme within the cell called deiodinase. Deiodinase means it removes one of the iodine atoms off the fluoride molecule, so it takes T4 and makes T3 out of it, the active thyroid hormone. The fluoride poisons that, so we have a problem with poor thyroid function within the cells, within the mitochondria, because we’re not producing adequate amounts of T3.
Thyroid Hormones Help You Have Energy

Now thyroid hormones govern your body’s ability to produce and use energy within the cells. It’s the spark plug of the cells. If you don’t get enough thyroid in your cells, I don’t care how much you have in your blood, it’s how much you have in your mitochondria. If you don’t get enough in the mitochondria, you’re going to have a whole series of symptoms. You could have fatigue, difficulty with weight, and low body temperature. Your body temperature should be 98.6 during the day. If it’s lower than that, and we see it often happens, 97s, even 96s, that means you’re not producing enough energy. The excess energy produced in the mitochondria is given off as heat, which gives your body a temperature. The body wants to run at a temperature of 98.6, that’s when the enzymes and all the chemical reactions of the body function best, at that temperature.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

So, if your body is running low and you have low voltage, low energy production, you’re not going to feel well, so you’re going to have:

  • difficulty with weight
  • poor energy level
  • low body temperature
  • not going to think clearly
  • poor sleep
  • joint and muscle aches and pains
  • sluggish bowel functions
  • problems with your menstrual cycles
  • infertility
  • recurring miscarriages

It’s going to keep your immune system, it’s going to be unhealthy because you don’t have enough energy and you’re going to be prone to infection. So these are a host of symptoms that we see with thyroid, besides loss of hair in women, puffiness, paleness, loss of the lateral third of the eyebrows, enlarged tongue, brittle, rigid fingernails, and loss of hair in the extremities and on the legs.

These are signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism which is caused by fluoride poisoning the thyroid gland, competing with the iodine and replacing it on the thyroid molecule, and also damaging the enzyme within the cells that converts the inactive thyroid hormone T4 to the active thyroid hormone T3. That’s fluoride.

How Did We Get So Much Exposure to Fluoride?

Now how did this happen? Fluoride was put in the water back in the 1960s, and I remember watching TV back then, there were arguments among city councils whether we’re going to buy and put fluoride in the water. Their idea was it was going to keep people from getting cavities. Well, guess what? Since we put fluoride in the water in the United States, 70% of the people in the United States have fluoride in the water. Guess where obesity is the highest, in what part of the population? In the population that has the fluoride in the water, or the population that doesn’t have the fluoride in the water? The obesity rates are much higher in those individuals who drink fluoride in their water. They put it in the city water, that’s what they do.

Stacey: Unlike the Europeans. That was something else-

Fluoride in the Water Leads to Obesity

Dr. Hotze:  Yes. Europeans completely banned fluoride in the water. In the United States currently right now, 70% of the population is overweight, half of those people, that’s 35% of the population, are obese. What’s that due to? Hypothyroidism. In Europe, you’ve got 16% of the people who are overweight, 8% of the people who are obese. It’s no different than what we used to have in America prior to putting fluoride in the water, when you had 16% overweight, 8% obese. That’s the story. And in France, they eat all kinds of bread, drink all kinds of wine. In Italy, pizza, pasta, olive oils and all of that, and they stay thin and trim overall compared to our population.

That, in my opinion, has been caused by fluoride. And for you dentists out there, get it out of your practice. You should not use it. Don’t let the dentist put fluoride on your teeth or your children’s teeth at all. Stay away from fluoride. It’s in the toothpaste, as well. Go look on the back of Crest or any one of the other toothpastes, there’s a little box, a warning. Nobody ever sees it. On that warning, it says, “If you ingest the amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush and swallow it, immediately call poison control or contact your doctor.” Now that’s crazy. Why? Because it’s toxic. The fluoride is toxic.

We sell Spry toothpaste at Hotze Health & Wellness Center, and it’s not fluoridated. There’s no warning box, no label on that toothpaste at all, so I’m going to highly recommend that you get a filter for your house, you get a reverse osmosis filter in the sink, or get some kind of filter system so you drink water that is pure, that doesn’t have any fluoride or other chemicals in it. Make sure you do that. Stay away from the toothpaste that has fluoride. Any products that they put fluoride in, including…what else did I say they had the fluoride in besides-

Stacey: So you said it’s in toothpaste-

Dr. Hotze: Oh, and also at the dentist’s office, don’t let them go painting fluoride on your teeth. That’s the story on fluoride, folks. It’s dangerous, it’s poison. Go to the…just go check this out at the Material Safety Data Sheet, MSDS. Type in fluoride, that’s the government’s Material Safety Data Sheet, and type in fluoride, and look at the toxic element it is. It is classified as toxic. Why in the world should we be putting it in our water? Why should we put it in our toothpaste?

Stacey: Right, and Dr. Hotze, for people who want to drink bottled water, you recommend that that be in glass bottles.

Dr. Hotze: Glass. And the one I know, and there are some…one in America is Mountain Valley Water, but there are some others that come out of Europe, and there’s even one that comes out of Mexico in bottles.

Stacey: But stay away from the plastic.

Dr. Hotze: Stay away from the plastics because they have the plasticizers and the chemicals that leech out of the walls into the water that can cause you toxic problems within yourselves.
