The Fluoride-Hypothyroidism Connection

Fluoride in water is supposed to protect the public health and it’s a good thing, right? Well, it’s time to revisit this assumption.  A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, a British Medical Journal (BMJ) publication, found that fluoride exposure should be considered a contributing factor to hypothyroidism. The study examines the association between levels of fluoride in the water supply with the prevalence of hypothyroidism in that area. The study found that people living in a wholly fluoridated area are nearly twice as likely to report high hypothyroidism prevalence in comparison to a non-fluoridated area.  “The findings of the study raise particular concerns about the validity of community fluoridation as a safe public health measure.”

What is Fluoride?

Fluorine is a chemical element belonging to the class of halogens, which includes chlorine, bromine and iodine. Fluoride is the negative ion of fluorine. Fluoride acts as a poison in the human body and inhibits the activity of enzymes necessary for the production of thyroid hormones. Fluoride has adverse effects on the immune system and triggers autoimmune disease, including autoimmune thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto’s, as well as many other health problems.

Here Are 15 Reasons to Avoid Fluoride in Water:

1) It poisons the enzymes in the thyroid gland that produce thyroid hormones.

2) It adversely affects the thyroid hormone receptors on all the body’s cells, preventing the  adequate uptake of thyroid hormones.

3) It inhibits the production of TSH from the pituitary gland.

4) It displaces iodine which is essential for producing thyroid hormones.

5) It can cause brittle bones.

6) It can cause arthritis.

7) It increases risk of bone cancer.

8) It can cause impaired fetal development.

9) It increases infertility  and damages sperm.

10) It can cause damage to the brain.

11) It causes brittle teeth and teeth discoloration.

12) It can cause cardiovascular disease.

13) It can cause dementia.

14) It can cause type 2 diabetes.

15) Is a mutagen that causes genetic damage.

Sources of Fluoride

Sources of fluoride include tap water, toothpaste, non-organic foods, pesticides used in farming, dental products, chewing gum, and household cleaning products, to name a few.

Here are a few tips to help prevent your exposure to fluoride:

1) Use a water filter system to remove fluoride from drinking water

2) Use non-fluoridated toothpaste

3) Read the labels on processed foods

4) Read the labels on cleaning products

5) Take oral iodine which displaces fluoride and allows it to be detoxified from your body

Fluoride is an unrecognized yet common cause of hypothyroidism. It is important that you protect your health from fluoride by taking steps to remove it from your everyday life.

At my last visit to my Dentist, he did not treat me with fluoride rinse as normal and suggest a toothpaste without fluoride; maybe they are getting the message

Sadly I was overexposed to fluoride. I had the discolored teeth as a kid, which got me teased a lot. My teeth were brittle and I had them pulled at 38 because they were so bad. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 19. The doctor looked at me funny for being 19 and skinny and yet was hypothyroid. I knew the had to be a connection. I had heard hypothyroidism could eat away your teeth from the inside. I would never wish this on anyone. The youth pain I endured not just physically but emotionally as well. Dentists and doctors would ask if I used meth. one even asked me if I was sure about that. I cried so hard every time I would hear it
