The Best Treatment for Hypothyroidism

In the news… Actress Sofia Vergara, who appears on the television show “Modern Family,” has been publicly speaking out about her experience with thyroid cancer.  She had her thyroid gland removed over ten years ago, which resulted in hypothyroidism.  During her interviews, she mentions that she takes Synthroid, and is now a spokesperson for this drug. While it is great that she is bringing awareness to hypothyroidism, it is not helpful that she is promoting Synthroid as the optimal treatment for hypothyroidism.  At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, many of our patients come to us on Synthroid but are still not feeling well.  We have found that they get much better results on bioidentical compounded T3/T4, which is identical to the thyroid hormones made by your thyroid gland.

A word about Synthroid… Unfortunately, conventional doctors are taught that Synthroid is the treatment of choice for hypothyroidism.  These synthetic thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid and Levothyroxine, contain only a synthetic version of T4, the inactive form of thyroid hormone.  Taking T4 without T3, the active form of thyroid hormone, is like replacing only seven of the eight spark plugs in your car’s engine.  Your body’s engine will run, but it will not function as well as it should.  Your cells must be able to convert T4 to T3, the active form of thyroid hormone, in order to produce energy.  For this reason, many people still experience all the symptoms of hypothyroidism even though they are taking these medications.

Bioidentical, Compounded T3/T4 – the Real Thing In contrast, compounded T3/T4 are identical to the thyroid hormones that the human body produces. Patients who are placed on T3/T4, and are given the appropriate dosage, will notice their symptoms of hypothyroidism markedly improve and often completely resolve.  It is very important that your doctor listens to your symptoms, and does not adjust your dose based solely on your blood work.

Do you have symptoms of hypothyroidism while taking Synthroid? While Synthroid seems to work for some people, like Sofia Vergara, it is important for you to know that it does not work for most people. So, if you are taking Synthroid and still experiencing symptoms of low thyroid function such as fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, depression, constipation, hair loss, poor sleep, and cold hands and feet, then please know that this is a common occurrence and you do have another option: compounded T3/T4. Sofia is nice and good-looking but she has made me mad. I tweet her that she should read things before she talks about things that she does not know. She must be paid a lot by Synthroid. What a mad world!

Sorry Lori Rutledge, but that’s a false and misleading statement. Not having T3 greatly contributed to me developing a tricuspid murmur with ongoing chest pain, in addition to other comorbidities. A lack of T3 greatly stresses your entire system and can wreak havoc on your heart and overall health. Which studies support your statements?
