My sister had her thyroid removed in February of 2017. Since then she was diagnosed with depression, pseudodementia, schizophrenia and finally dementia. Her levels have been in the 40s and 50s. On 200mcg of Synthroid they drop to .075, too low. Our doctors cant figure it out and she is now being placed in a nursing home with severe dementia. Is there any treatment? Is this reversible?

Dear Dawn,
We are so sorry to hear about your sister. Synthroid is often not an effective treatment for low thyroid function, and many patients still have symptoms of hypothyroidism. Our doctors recommend using desiccated thyroid that is identical to the thyroid hormones made by our thyroid gland. Also, most conventional doctors rely solely on the TSH blood test to determine the dosage of thyroid medication, which fails many patients because the lab range is so wide. Our doctors listen to the patient’s symptoms. If they are still having symptoms, then the dose needs to be adjusted for that patient. Symptoms tell you that something is still not right.
